RubyMom — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 27 July 2026

RubyMom (“the app”, “we”, “us”) helps you check whether a product is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding by reading its label, and lets you ask follow-up questions about what you find through our in-app assistant, Ask Ruby. This policy explains what the app collects, why, and who it is shared with. RubyMom does not require an account, and we do not ask for your name, email, address, or phone number.

Not medical advice. RubyMom provides general, evidence-informed information only — this includes the answers Ask Ruby gives, which are generated by an AI model and may be incomplete or wrong. It is not a medical device and is not a substitute for advice from your doctor, midwife, or pharmacist. Always consult a qualified professional about your specific situation.

What we collect and why

DataWhyWhere it goes
Product label photos & barcodes you capture with the camera To read ingredients and identify the product so we can generate a safety result Sent to Google (Gemini via Firebase AI Logic) and, as a fallback, to our RubyMom backend (which uses Anthropic’s Claude) to analyse the label. A scanned barcode is also looked up in the Open Food Facts databases to identify the product. Used only to produce your result; not used to identify you.
Your stage & interests (e.g. trying to conceive, trimester, breastfeeding; categories like food or cosmetics) To tailor which safety rules apply to you Stored on your device. Sent with a scan request to tailor that result.
Ask Ruby messages — what you type or tap in the assistant, and the conversation so far. When you open it from a scan result, the ingredient and product name from that result are included too, along with your stage, so the answer fits your situation. To generate a reply to your question Sent to Google (Gemini via Firebase AI Logic) to produce the answer. Nothing else is sent with it: no name, no email, no scan history. Conversations are not saved — see Retention.
Scan history (products you scanned and their results) So you can review past scans Stored on your device.
Usage & diagnostics (feature events, an A/B experiment group, app/device model, OS version, approximate performance data, and identifiers such as an app-instance / advertising-style analytics ID) To keep the app working and improve it Google Firebase Analytics & Remote Config, and Mixpanel (EU). For Ask Ruby these record only that a conversation happened and how many questions were asked — never what you asked, never the answer, and not which ingredient you asked about.
Purchase information (that you started a trial / subscribed, and an anonymous purchaser ID) To unlock premium features and manage your subscription Google Play Billing and RevenueCat. We never see or store your card details.
Device-integrity signals (Play Integrity attestation) To confirm requests come from a genuine, untampered app and prevent abuse Google Firebase App Check.

Who processes your data

These providers act as our processors and use the data to provide their service to us. We do not sell your data, and we do not use your label photos or health information for advertising.

Retention

Stage, interests, and scan history live on your device and are removed when you clear the app’s data or uninstall it. Label images are processed to produce a result and are not retained by us to build a profile of you; our processors handle transient data per their own policies. Analytics and purchase records are retained by Google/RevenueCat per their standard retention periods.

Ask Ruby conversations are not stored at all — not on your device and not by us. A conversation exists only while the chat is open; closing it discards the whole thread, and reopening the assistant starts from scratch. We keep no record of what you asked or what you were told. Google processes the messages to generate each answer under its own terms.

Children

RubyMom is intended for adults (expectant and new parents) and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
